Our Experience is the Best Teacher AmeriCorps

All Self-Advocacy/AmeriCorps presentations are conducted by individuals with disabilities and are based on our experiences, dreams, hopes and abilities. We speak about inclusion, opportunity, choice, and giving back to the community. Self-advocates have learned from years of experience that it is our voices, individually and collectively, that most effectively break down barriers and build bridges within our communities.

Presentations can be tailored to the needs of the audience. Generally, smaller groups up to 50 people work best for the interactive, story-based format we use. However, we do present to large auditoriums of people when necessary.

Presentations can be from 30 minutes to 2 hours in length. In shorter presentations, a brief getting to know you section is followed by interactive games or questions and answers. In longer presentations, videos, handouts, and occasionally PowerPoints are utilized in addition to more in-depth personal stories.

Speakers focus their stories on the needs of the audience: for school children we may recall school experiences, for adults with disabilities we focus on self advocacy, for staff trainings we focus on experiences working with staff. Presentations for young children focus on how there are many ways we are different, but there are more ways we are the same. Awareness, acceptance, and how we are people like any other person is always the message.

Some regions also present on the following topics: Relationships, Sexuality, and Disability (a rights based presentation), Including People with Disabilities as Volunteers, and Volunteering for People with Disabilities.
