Speaking Up for OurselvesDavid Liscomb

David Liscomb is the current president of the Self-Advocacy Association of New York State, Inc. (SANYS), an organization run by and for people with Developmental Disabilities.  David has been a member of the board of SANYS for the past six years.  He is the founding member of the North Country Self-Advocacy Group, which he started in 1995 and for which he served as president twice.
In May of 2008, David became the Self-advocacy consultant/professional self-advocate for Jefferson Rehabilitation Center (JRC).  Prior to that he worked as Switchboard Operator/Receptionist and as a Supervising Aide at Production Limited also at JRC.

Up until this year, David had volunteered as a teacher of Special Religious Classes at St Patrick’s Intermediary School in Watertown, N.Y.

David received an education at the Batavia School for the Blind in upstate, N.Y.
He is on the OPWDD’s Commissioner’s Advisory Council, and was just appointed to the board of Jefferson Rehab.

When David speaks of his work as self-advocate and what self-advocacy means to him, he says, “As I grew in self-advocacy I felt like I sprang from a cocoon and became a real butterfly”.
