6 months.

What does self-advocacy mean to you?
Help yourself and to advocate. Help others to advocate.

What local committees or Boards have you had experience with?
VICA in BOCES.

What do you think is the most important thing that the Self-Advocacy Association accomplishes?
To help yourself and others to be more independent and be in control of your own lives.

What is one personal dream or goal that you have for yourself?
To be on my own and to be married to my fiancée and to have my own business. I want to be very wealthy to help the poor and people in need of money or a home or clothes and food.

What does self-advocacy mean to you?
It means to speak out to people to help them get better lives.

What leadership positions have you had – officer of your local group, etc.
I'm currently secretary on the statewide board.

What do you think is the most important thing that the Self-Advocacy Association accomplishes?
When people speak out and learn about self-advocacy.

What is one personal dream or goal that you have for yourself?
I want to own my own home and I got married.

What does self-advocacy mean to you?
Speaking up for yourself and others who cannot speak up for themselves

What leadership positions have you had – officer of your local group, etc.
Vice-President and President of my local group.

What local committees or Boards have you had experience with?
Previous experience on the statewide board.

What do you think is the most important thing that the Self-Advocacy Association accomplishes?
Speaking up for people who cannot speak up for themselves, transportation issues, the Speaker’s Bureau

What is one personal dream or goal that you have for yourself?
Traveling.

Michelle Teutsch

How long have you been involved with self-advocacy?
I have been involved in a Self-Advocacy group at the UCP Vocational Program for 4 years. The group recently disbanded, but I am working to get it restarted or join the UCP evening habilitation self-advocacy group.

What does self-advocacy mean to you?
It means speaking up for myself and others. Making sure we know our rights. Voicing our opinions even if people don’t agree. People should know that they have a choice and don’t let nobody stop them.

What leadership positions have you had – officer of your local group, etc.
When I was in the Self-Advocacy group at UCP I was the Vice-President.

What local committees or Boards have you had experience with?
Being on the SANYS board is the first experience I’ve had but I’d like to do more.

What do you think is the most important thing that the Self-Advocacy Association accomplishes?
Teaching people to speak up for themselves. Teaching people that they have rights and choices—and not letting anbody stop them because they have a disability. Teaching us that we have the right to do what we want to do.

What is one personal dream or goal that you have for yourself?
I want to get married in the future. I like to do arts and crafts and I would like to start my own business selling them.

Almost 2 years

What does self-advocacy mean to you?
Learning to speak out for myself and to help other self-advocates when they want to do stuff. To help them to speak out for themselves and about SA so they can tell others

What leadership positions have you had – officer of your local group, etc.
President of Renegades group.

What do you think is the most important thing that the Self-Advocacy Association accomplishes?
Helping people to get their dreams and to know that they have the right to make their own decisions and be independent on their own.

What is one personal dream or goal that you have for yourself?
I want to work with children and go to college to get an education degree and become a teacher. My goal is to become more independent and teach myself and others about more self-advocacy skills.

Sharon Hager

4 years

What does self-advocacy mean to you?
It helps me a lot, I meet different people and I help them and they help me.

What leadership positions have you had – officer of your local group, etc.
I was secretary on the statewide board.

What do you think is the most important thing that the Self-Advocacy Association accomplishes?
Helping people—people can get support from SA to do self-advocacy.

What is one personal dream or goal that you have for yourself?
I reached my dream of having a job in the community.

Judy O’Connell



How long have you been involved with self-advocacy?
7 years

What does self-advocacy mean to you?
Advocating for myself, telling people how I’m doing. Educating the community and helping people to be advocates so they can be treated with dignity and respect.

What leadership positions have you had – officer of your local group, etc.
President of SA group for about five years, but the group stopped because of a lack of help from the agency.

What do you think is the most important thing that the Self-Advocacy Association accomplishes?
The people at the Association really help people to learn about self-advocacy and their options in an honest way.

What is one personal dream or goal that you have for yourself?
Move out of my group home because I want to make my own choices and be around the people I choose.

What does self-advocacy mean to you?
Learning to stick up for yourself and make new friends.

What leadership positions have you had – officer of your local group, etc.
Vice-President of the United Nations SA Group at Wildwood.

What do you think is the most important thing that the Self-Advocacy Association accomplishes?
Telling people with a disability how to speak up for their rights.

What is one personal dream or goal that you have for yourself?
Get married.

What does self-advocacy mean to you?
Teaching others what their rights are and also speaking about self-determination. Standing up and speaking out for others.

What leadership positions have you had – officer of your local group, etc.
Vice-President of Meeting Together to Make Things Better (MT2MTB)

What do you think is the most important thing that the Self-Advocacy Association accomplishes?
Working together-builds teamwork.

What is one personal dream or goal that you have for yourself?
Marriage.
