Self-Determination

OMRDD and the Self-Advocacy Association of New York State, Inc. (SA) have received a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s National Program on Self-Determination. The goal of this grant is to create a “learning community” in New York State about the concept of self-determination. Self-Determination as viewed by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s National Program represents a significant change in the way people with developmental disabilities receive support. Under this concept people who receive supports may:

  • have control of their living arrangements including leasing and owning their own home
  • do not necessarily live in congregate settings and live with other people with disabilities only by choice
  • make hiring decisions about the staff who support them and help in the training
  • have a circle of friends and family who support their efforts
  • plan their own lives with a person centered approach
  • are connected with friends and associations in the community
