Shameka Andrews Receive’s the Thomas Maul Self-Award from NYSRA—the New State Rehabilitation Association.

<back

I am very excited to introduce Shameka Andrews as NYSRA’s 2010, Thomas A. Maul Self-Advocacy Award.

Shameka is a fantastic self-advocacy leader and an important voice for people with developmental and other disabilities here in the Capital District and throughout New York State.

Currently, Shameka is a State-wide Project Assistant for the Self-Advocacy Association of New York State; an organizing member of the Capital City Self-Advocacy Group; a member of the OPWDD Commissioner’s Advisory Council; a volunteer for a number of Albany area organizations; and a former Miss Wheelchair NY.

Her wisdom, experience and guidance are a true gift to all of us who represent agencies that provide supports for people with disabilities in New York State.   Her honest, thoughtful, and frank advocacy on behalf of others has influenced how many of us think about the important role we have in helping people live the lives they want; work to their potential, and become full members of their communities.

Recently, Shameka played a key role as a member of NYSRA’s 21 Century Supportive Employment Stakeholders’ group.

Steve Holmes, describes Shameka as a “terrific co-worker and colleague, a thoughtful speaker, a fierce advocate, and woman with an infectious laugh”.

I am happy to present the Thomas A. Maul Self-Advocacy Award to Shameka Andrews!

Jeff Wise
President and CEO of the New State Rehabilitation Association
